What is a leaded tantalum capacitor?

A leaded tantalum capacitor is a type of tantalum capacitor that has metal leads for through-hole mounting on a printed circuit board. It is usually encapsulated in a small epoxy box to protect it from damage. Leaded tantalum capacitors can have different shapes, such as bead, axial, or radial. They are marked with their capacitance and voltage ratings, either with figures or colour codes.

Leaded tantalum capacitors are used for the same applications as other tantalum capacitors, such as power supply filtering and decoupling, audio and video equipment, portable devices, and automotive electronics. However, leaded tantalum capacitors are more suitable for through-hole mounting on a printed circuit board than surface-mount devices. They are also more resistant to mechanical stress and vibration than chip capacitors. Leaded tantalum capacitors are mostly used for military, medical and space applications that require high reliability and performance. There are four case sizes, voltage ratings spanning 6V to 125V, and operating temperatures of up to 200°C. Vishay's Solid-Electrolyte TANTALEX™ Capacitors are hermetically sealed, axial-leaded, and CECC Approved. Terminations are tin / lead (SnPb) or 100 % tin (RoHS-compliant). The capacitors have a hermetically sealed metal case with plastic film insulation. An extended capacitance range (type 749DX) is available. They have high operational stability with both time and temperature, low leakage current and a low dissipation factor. Applications: Performance and reliability has been proven in a wide range of applications such as filtering, by-pass, coupling, energy storage, and timing circuits.
