What is an aluminium polymer capacitor?

Aluminium polymer capacitors (also called polymer electrolytic capacitors or in short polymer e-caps) are a sub-form of electrolytic capacitors. Their special feature is that a conductive polymer is used instead of a liquid electrolyte. Additionally, electrolytic capacitors can have a hybrid construction - a combination of wet electrolyte and solid polymer. Aluminium electrolytic and aluminium polymer capacitors have very good resistance to voltage and temperature bias effects, along with very good aging characteristics.

In comparison to ceramic capacitors, aluminium polymer electrolytic capacitors offer significant advantages, especially their DC bias performance. In addition, the use of polymer capacitors allows increase of capacitance while maintaining cost. The special design process can also be used to significantly reduce the parasitic effects (especially ESL). This creates the potential to handle high ripple current, have low parasitic inductance, high reliability and very good temperature properties.

Panasonic Industry’s SVPF Series of conductive polymer aluminium solid capacitors offers high voltage capability (50V maximum), large capacitance of up to 1000µF, and 5000 hours’ operation at 105°C. They are RoHS compliant and halogen-free.

Würth Elektronik’s WCAP-PSLC aluminium polymer capacitor series offers large capacitance with low ESR over a wide frequency range and a high permissible ripple current. Its capacitance range is 10 µF ‒ 2000 µF with a capacitance tolerance of ±20 %. Voltage range (UR) is 6.3 ‒ 100 V(DC). Operating temperature is -55 °C up to +105 °C with 2000h @ +105 °C endurance.

Mounting style is V-Chip SMT.
